On Saturday, Oct. 24, Gettysburg College hosted the symposium “Memory through Imagery, Gettysburg and Lincoln” in Mara Auditorium from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by a reception at Schmucker Art Gallery.
The event accompanied the two exhibitions currently on display at the gallery: “A Great and Truthful Medium: Photography at Gettysburg and Beyond, Selection from the Ron Perisho Collection at Gettysburg College” and “Uncle Abe — The Common Image of the Uncommon Man.”
The event began with the opportunity to have a student-led tour of the gallery, introducing attendees to the images displayed.
The events continued with a symposium with a presentation by James Broomall, Civil War historian and the William Binford Vest Chair in History at the University of Richmond. Broomall discussed the exhibit and shared about the photographers, including Mathew Brady, Alexander Gardner and James Gibson.
