Gettysburg volleyball came back from an opening-set loss to defeat Mary Washington 3-1, winning three consecutive sets to close out a tightly contested match.
Mary Washington opened the match with strong serving, but Gettysburg answered quickly. A strong block followed by a kill from the Bullets put Gettysburg ahead early. Despite solid serving from both teams, Mary Washington began to establish its offense and regain control of the set.
By the first timeout, Mary Washington led 19-16, using its middle hitters and outside attackers to find openings in the Gettysburg defense. The Bullets’ back row played well throughout the set, but Gettysburg struggled to finish points, with several attacks ending without kills or tips. Mary Washington capitalized on those opportunities to maintain its lead and take the opening set.
Gettysburg responded in the second set. Outside hitter Erin Gonzales ’27 opened the scoring with a kill, and the Bullets gradually built a lead behind stronger serving and improved defense. Gettysburg’s defense helped extend rallies and create more opportunities for its offense, allowing the Bullets to find their rhythm.
Mary Washington continued to challenge Gettysburg, repeatedly finding kills and disrupting the Bullets’ momentum. The Eagles eventually tied the set at 18-18. A strong block from middle hitter Gianna Galli ’27 helped Gettysburg withstand the run, and the Bullets produced enough offense late in the set to take the win and even the match.
Gettysburg carried that momentum into the third set. The Bullets’ setter used well-placed touches to keep Mary Washington’s defense off balance while Gettysburg’s offense continued to find openings. The Bullets controlled the set and pulled away for a 25-18 victory, moving one set away from closing out the match.
Gettysburg finished the comeback in the fourth set, continuing to attack with greater consistency and power. Gonzales and Galli emerged as key offensive contributors as the Bullets kept Mary Washington’s defense moving and limited its ability to establish a rhythm.
Improved defense and steady serving helped Gettysburg maintain control late in the set. Mary Washington remained competitive, using strong defense and well-placed shots to extend rallies, but the Eagles struggled to maintain the same consistency from the service line.
Gettysburg closed out the fourth set to secure the 3-1 victory and complete the comeback.
