Salsa on the Square was held in downtown Gettysburg on Sept. 25 from 5 to 10:30 p.m on Lincoln Square. The event allows Gettysburg College to collaborate with the community and celebrate Hispanic and Latino cultures. It featured a live band, food stands, organizations from Gettysburg College and more.
Gabriella Orellana ’29 said, “Salsa on the Square is important to me, especially as a Salvadoran, because it allows for my friends and peers to see a bit of my culture.”
Many other students also enjoyed the event. “It was an awesome event that really displayed the amazing Hispanic culture that we have around Gettysburg,” Lillian Judge ’29 said.
Aside from exposing students to and teaching them about different cultures, the event also provides volunteer opportunities for students.
Naimah Stephens ‘28 said, “we’re volunteering for Vida Charter School. It is a bilingual school about a mile away from Gettysburg College. … We’re here mostly catering to the children at Salsa on the Square. We have cornhole, and then we’re doing coloring with crayons.”
Other organizations on campus also used the event to spread awareness, including Project León.
“It really showed the connection between Gettysburg and Nicaragua through Project León,” Anna Fidel ’29 said.
Overall, Salsa on the Square brought students and community members together to celebrate Hispanic and Latino cultures while strengthening the connection between Gettysburg College and the surrounding community.
