The Garthwait Leadership Center (GLC) released its application for three unique leadership programs advertised for first and second-year students, all offered at no cost. The Leadership Certificate (LC), Group Facilitation Fellowship (GFF) and Outdoor Leadership Program (OLP) help students explore their strengths and practice skills for being an effective leader. The application deadline is this Friday, Sept. 12.

The LC is a one-year program where participants earn a leadership certificate through “collaborative learning groups, one-on-one coaching opportunities, personal reflections, and a group project for social change.” Its components include reflection, leadership coaching, a CliftonStrengths Assessment, and more. The program concludes with the Leadership Showcase, a chance for students to show off their work from the year.
The GFF is a six-week intensive featuring programming on learning to lead groups, navigate difference in teams and facilitate engaging meetings. It features lessons on the fundamentals of facilitation using the GLC’s Challenge Course to help participants apply their learning outside of the GFF.
The OLP is a semester-long practical experience that is an optional component of the GFF. It “serves as the foundation to lead groups in remote settings” and includes “an overnight backpacking trip that serves as a high impact learning experience.” It involves technical skill development in backcountry cooking, knot-tying, navigation, thermoregulation and more. The OLP stresses the importance of leadership philosophy, the value of reflection and outdoor trip planning.
