Tuberculosis Case Confirmed on Campus

By Brandon Fey, Editor-in-Chief

On Thursday, Dean of Students Jeff Foster shared an email with the campus community stating that an individual on campus had tested positive for tuberculosis (TB).

He reported that the community member is undergoing treatment and is following safety guidelines provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Adams County State Health Center, with which the College is working to address the situation. There have been no additional positive tests or related symptoms reported.

Foster also stated that tuberculosis is spread through airborne bacteria after “frequent, repetitive, and prolonged exposure to a symptomatic person,” and contact with surfaces cannot transmit the infection.

Representatives from the Adams County State Health Center will soon contact those deemed to be close contacts to the infected individual to provide further guidance, which may include cost-free testing. Foster stated that based on the available information, it is believed that the number of such close contacts is “very limited.”

This is a developing story. More information will added as it becomes available.
