The student body elected Jocelyn Duquette ’27 to be the next Student Body President. In the race, Duquette defeated Jack Thompson ’27 and Omer Shamil ’28. Garrett Bumps ’28 was elected as the Vice President of the Student Body, defeating Nafay Amer ’28. Finally, Olivia Hippensteel was elected as the Inclusion Officer of the Student Senate, defeating Elijah Powell ’27.
Duquette spoke about how excited and honored she is to be elected as President, before expanding on what she hopes to work on during her term.
“I truly care about this campus and my peers. My main goals for my term are to improve clarity on tough decisions made by the administration, for example, the reasons behind dwindling numbers of off-campus housing, budget cuts, and faculty/staff layoffs; and to show up for more groups on campus and make sure they know the Student Senate cares and wants them to feel seen and supported,” she elaborated. “To prove this, we are looking to add representatives on the Student Senate from typically uninvolved organizations, such as Athletics and Greek life, including IFC [Interfraternity Council], Panhel[lenic], and Multicultural Greek organizations. As the Student Senate, we are supposed to represent all groups on this campus, and in the past, I feel like that has been lacking.”
Bumps thanked all the students who voted in the election, adding that he would appreciate their continued engagement and attention to the Senate this coming year.
“As Vice President, I intend to continue improving student body outreach and amend the budget process to create a more efficient and equitable system for student organizations to access funding,” he elaborated. “Please do not hesitate to reach out with any suggestions or concerns during my tenure as Vice President, I am here to listen!”
Hippensteel also mentioned how grateful she is for the support she received in the election, along with her excitement.
“As Inclusion Officer, I hope to connect Student Senate with the student body to ensure diversity and proper representation in our campus community,” shared Hippensteel. “One thing I am most excited for is planning outreach events between Student Senate and on-campus clubs and organizations. I also strive to keep our campus administration accountable in upholding DEI values in our campus community and address any discrimination that comes up. Thank you again for your support, go bullets!”
