2/16 Student Senate Meeting Minutes

The Gettysburg College Student Senate provided the following minutes. Besides formatting, they have not been edited in any way.

Approval of Minutes

  • Motion passed.

Guest Speakers

  • Chad Alan Carr, Mayor of Gettysburg
    • Background
      • From Galveston County, Texas.
      • Mayor Carr was involved in theater throughout his life, and was introduced to Community Theater during the 7th grade. He found an accepting community within the theater. This sparked his life path. Mayor Carr traveled to New York and performed in a broadway show. He met people in Adams County, and helped establish the Gettysburg Community Theater, located on York Street in 2009.
      • In 2015, Mayor Carr established the Gettysburg Pride program, which takes place over Alumni Weekend.
      • In 2020, Mayor Carr helped establish the Black Lives Matter movement in Gettysburg. Mayor Carr also ran in the Borough Mayoral race, losing by a small margin to former Mayor Rita Frealing.
      • Soon after, Mayor Carr was elected to Gettysburg Borough Council. Not having achieved all of what he hoped to on the Borough Council, Mayor Carr ran for Mayor, and was elected.
  • Questions & Answers:
    • I have not seen many police officers around campus. Why?
      • The feedback that the Gettysburg Police Department received from the Gettysburg campus is that some Officer’s engagement with students was inappropriate, or not appreciated. The Department is being receptive to feedback, under the leadership of Chief Chris Evans.
      • Campus Safety is a great resource, but the Borough has police will respond whenever they are called, and are always a resource available to students.
      • A new Chief of Police will be announced soon.
    • What specific steps are being taken to improve the relationship between the Gettysburg College campus and the Gettysburg Police Department?
      • The relationship will be improved through conversations with Campus Safety and the Police Department. Further student engagement will be helpful, and students can contact the Borough Council as well.
    • Do the police need to come on scene if an ambulance is called?
      • Yes. That is something that is outside the scope of the Borough to change.
    • Why is the light between E Water St and W Water St light so long?
      • Mayor Carr will bring the concern to the Department of Public Works.
    • Is there anything you want to see from students?
      • Yes. Students should venture off campus and spend time in the Borough. Issues with Gettysburg Police Department are being resolved, and students should feel comfortable spending time in Gettysburg. Visit the small businesses surrounding campus. There are also volunteer opportunities with nonprofit organizations in the area.
    • There is a campus employee that serves on the Borough Council, but elected out of a different Ward. Should students reach out to him, or reach out to other members that are within the Ward
      • All members of the Borough Council represent all of Gettysburg, not just the ward they were elected by.
    • What is your favorite musical?
      • A Chorus Line because it has a lot of race and LGBTQIA themes.
  • Nikki West, Executive Director of Alumni Engagement & Annual Giving
    • Tier 2 and Tier 3 organizations can apply to raise money going directly to their organizations as part of Gettysburg Gives.
    • Applications must be submitted by Friday (02/20), and someone must attend an information session on Monday (02/23) regarding fundraising.
    • Questions can be sent to nwest@gettysburg.edu.
