9/22 Student Senate Meeting Minutes

The Gettysburg College Student Senate provided the following minutes. Besides formatting, they have not been edited in any way.


Approval of Minutes

  • Motion passed.

Guest Speaker – Hallie Deardorf, CRNP

  • New nurse practitioner at Health Center
  • California State University, Salinas Alumna
  • College pays for student visits for common illnesses, and sells common medications out of pocket.
  • The Health Center offers free Tylenol and acetaminophen as well as birth control.
  • The Health Center is open 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM. F
  • Flu shots are also available by appointment on Thursdays and Fridays, and will be billed to insurance.
  • Q & A
    • Do you have to be on the school insurance?
      • No. They may ask for your insurance to pay for testing.
    • Does the health center have an x-ray machine?
      • No. Campus safety often brings injured parties to the hospital. They can handle minor sprains, but most are referred to the hospital.
    • What steps have been taken towards price transparency?
      • When the school changed contract-types, they moved away from co-pays, and most tests are covered by the school. Any charges will be explained upfront.

      • Senate recognizes 7 affinity groups, while OSAGL recognizes 10. Parliamentarians currently code each organization into a group.
      • 3 Options
        • Align with OSAGL – Raises group leaders to 10, increasing size of Senate.
        • Lower Affinity Group Leader number to 5, with each group leader representing 2 types of organizations.
        • No change.
      • Strong Senate support shown for Club Council
    • Club Tier Funding
      • Tier 1 is unique, well established, groups, such as Senate, the Yearbook, and WZBT, with independent funding.
      • Tier 2 is a standard club, with an executive board, standard access to funding, a case budget, faculty advisor, etc.
      • Tier 3 is a very small organization that just has a President, but does not need a specific advisor, executive board, or access to campus vehicles, etc. ●
      • Policy question is whether tier 3 organizations should have access to a base budget, given the lack of oversight.
      • 3 Options
        • Require T3 organizations to appear before BMC to access their $100 budget.
        • Cap funding of T3 organizations at $200.
        • No change.

    • About 5.2% of the total budget has been spent.

    • Almost all photos have been updated on the website.
    • All Committee Chairs have received an attendance sheet, and Committee attendance is required.

Student Concerns 

  • Updates on Previous Concerns
    • There should be pesto sauce in the pasta line.
      • This change began in effect this Monday.
    •  Who put the quotes in the library?
      • There used to be a quote from a past President, which was taken down when President Iuliano came in, and a quote was decided to be put up. They then realized there was another space, and ran a library worker contest to decide what the other quote should be.
    • Facilities did not send an email until midday Monday regarding laundry.
      • Facilities was not in the office until the next business day, so reports were not seen until then.
  • New Concerns
    • Athletes are screaming in the gym.
    • Power outages are happening frequently.
    • Some sidewalks on campus are uneven.
    • The crosswalk lights between Breidenbaugh Hall and Hanson Hall are out.
    • Can Dean Brandauer attend a Senate meeting?
    • The library and McCreary patio steps are not well lit.
    • Physics PLA pay has been reduced.
    • Seated leg curl machine has been out of order in the gym for two weeks.
    • Paul dorm is hard to access because of the barricade around Stine Hall.
    • Patrick door scan does not always work.
