On Friday, Provost Jamila Bookwala sent out a campus-wide email announcing Associate Professor of War and Memory Studies Dr. Ian Isherwood ’00 as the new Director of the Civil War Institute (CWI), beginning Aug. 25. He takes over the position from the late Dr. Peter Carmichael.
Ishwerwood graduated from Gettysburg College in 2000 and returned for a full-time career in 2012 as the Assistant Director of the CWI. In that role, he taught in the CWES program and mentored students in the CWI Fellows program, along with establishing the CWI’s social media and blog, The Gettysburg Compiler.
Apart from his time at the College, Isherwood was recently selected as the Harold K. Johnson Chair of Military History at the United States Army College and taught history in the Department of National Security and Strategy. He is an active scholar in First World War Studies, publishing two single-author books: “Remembering the Great War: Writing and Publishing the Experiences of WWI” (2017) and “The Battalion: Citizen Soldiers at War on the Western Front” (2024).
“Dr. Isherwood looks forward to expanding student-centered opportunities in the study of the Civil War era and public history through the CWI,” concluded Bookwala.
