College Announces New Visual Identity

On Wednesday, July 23, the Office of the President announced via a campus-wide email that Gettysburg College has adopted a new visual identity. In his email, President Iuliano described the change as “an outward expression of our enduring mission and bold aspirations for the future.”

The identity includes a wordmark, in which the words “Gettysburg College” are centered above each other in a 19th-century-inspired typeface, which is stated to “pay homage to our hallmark liberal arts and sciences education through its traditional Serif letterforms.” The wordmark includes the new Gettysburg G, which is designed to stand as a symbol on its own, and above a lockup of the founding year 1832.

“Gettysburg College is a special community,” commented Chief Communications and Marketing Officer Jamie Yates. “For nearly 200 years, we’ve changed to meet the needs of our students and what the world asks of us as Gettysburgians.”

Part of the impetus behind the new designs was the alignment of the College’s iconography. At the launch of social media in the mid-2000s, the school used its Athletic G design (featuring the diagonally split colors blue and orange) as a “temporary institutional mark,” which has since become one of the school’s most iconic symbols. The new Gettysburg G now allows the Athletic G to return to athletics, “where it will continue to be sported by our Bullets teams and fans for years to come.”

The identity also includes an updated Gettysburg College seal, which is reserved for use by the Board of Trustees, the Office of the President, and for formal events. The seal has been “refined for greater clarity and flexibility,” with new laurel framing having been added to the image of the Pennsylvania Hall cupola with the American flag atop its flagpole.

In his email, Iuliano connected the identity to other new campus initiatives and shared a video highlighting the legacy of the College, which culminated in a revelation of the new identity. He also stated that the new identity will be implemented across campus over the coming years, and expressed his gratitude to all those involved in the design.

“What made this process (the new visual identity) so inspiring to me was how so many Gettysburgians offered their voice to a design that is distinctively us, distinctively Gettysburg,” said Yates. We heard from current students, prospective students, faculty, administrators, support staff, alumni, and trustees—hundreds of individuals across our campus and beyond. Together, we created something that will be part of the fabric of our College for many years to come. We’re deeply grateful.”
