Mike Mattia, the College’s athletics director since 2018, will leave his position at the end of June for an opportunity in the private sector. Vice President for Enrollment and Educational Services and Dean of Admission J. Carey Thompson shared the news in a campus-wide email this morning.
“While we are certainly sad to see Mike go, we are excited for him and his family as they begin this new chapter in their lives,” wrote Thompson. “We wish him the very best.”
Thompson praised Mattia’s leadership, stating, “during his time at Gettysburg, Mike has left an indelible mark on our athletics and recreation programs.” He shared that Gettysburg’s athletics teams have won 12 Centennial Conference championships and 35 NCAA tournament appearances during Mattia’s time.
“In the past three years alone, Mike [Mattia] has overseen the recruitment of a new generation of outstanding head coaches, following the retirement of a few long-standing leaders within our program,” wrote Thompson.
Thompson also praised Mattia for “significantly [expanding] recreational and wellness opportunities for our students through the growth of club sports and intramurals.” He said Mattia has played a “pivotal role” in the Orange and Blue Club, a fundraiser which supports student-athletes. Under Mattia, fundraising has risen by 82%.
Thompson concluded the email: “We are deeply grateful that Mike, his wife Anne, and their daughter Laura will remain in the area and continue their loyal support of the Bullets. I will be in touch with the community regarding the next steps in our process at a later date. Until then, please join me in thanking Mike for his dedicated service to Gettysburg College and in wishing him all the best in his future endeavors.”
