Apple Hall’s hallways appear to be a gateway to the Backrooms.

Today, Apple Hall resident Ryan Carter ’26 was reported missing by Campus Safety. Last seen in the Apple Hall basement, Carter left to collect their laundry and has not been seen since. It is suspected by authorities that Carter fell into the Backrooms

Campus Safety would like to remind Gettysburg residents to remain cautious when traveling through campus at night.

“Even inside your own residence halls, it’s best to remain cautious. The floor plan of Apple Hall’s basement is not recorded on any of our records, making it a prime location for these supposed Backrooms,” said Officer Caleb Brooks.

The existence of Backrooms is not fully understood, or even confirmed. Seemingly existing outside of time, survivors of these spaces describe a veritable labyrinth of empty, unused hallways and unfurnished and windowless rooms. Other potential backroom entrances exist across Gettysburg College, including the infamous haunted basement of Pennsylvania Hall.

Students, faculty and staff should remain on the lookout for any unfamiliar or suspicious entrances, especially if walking through campus buildings alone. These doorways, while seeming unremarkable at first, could potentially lead someone beyond the reach of reality and into a miserable existence of identical-looking rooms.

“I hope Carter is found soon,” said one student. “One of my cousins got stuck in the Backrooms for three days and had to be hospitalized.”

The Apple Hall basement has been sealed for investigation during this time, and Campus Safety has opened this case to the Gettysburg Borough Police Department.
