Opinion: Student Senate on Reducing the Financial Burden from Laundry Services

Framework and Basis

The below opinion (S/RES/2403) was approved by the Student Senate during its weekly meeting on April 22, 2024.

The opinion was drafted by the Student Senate Opinions Committee during the week of April 15, 2024, with the knowledge that the College’s laundry services contract expires at some time in the foreseeable future. The committee determined that:

  1. Caldwell and Gregory, the laundry services provider, is ineffective in its response to broken or malfunctioning machines, posing an inconvenience to students.
  2. The fee charged for laundry machine use poses an undue financial burden on students and creates an access inequity.
  3. Students pay sufficient room and board fees that should already include access to laundry services
  4. Gettysburg College Facility Services responds more efficiently and effectively to broken machines and has the full confidence of the student body.

The Student Senate General Body approved the Opinion unanimously.

We find this Opinion to be an accurate representation of the desires of the student body and hope that it is the first in a series of conversations to better improve the student experience.

Asserting that College ownership of its laundry machines and services would create a more equitable, efficient, and straightforward system,
