Student Senate 2/26: College Improvement Project Discussed

By Ella Prieto, Managing Editor

The Student Senate meeting was presided over by Inclusion Officer Abby Ruggiero ’26 as President Pro Tempore due to Vice President Geoffrey Meadville ’25 being absent.

Officer Reports

President Andrew Lemon ’24 had nothing new to report.

Ruggiero gave Meadville’s report, which asked that senators dress in business attire for the next meeting because President Bob Iuliano, Vice President for College Life Anne Ehrlich and Provost Jamila Bookwala will be guest speakers.

Treasurer Alfredo Roman Jordan provided a budget update, sharing that the Senate has spent $38,000 and allocated $22,150. He also gave some facts, consisting of average expenditures and the top ten groups by total expenditure

Committee Reports

The Opinions Committee will have their regular meeting this week on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. in CUB 210A along with a special meeting on Friday at 10 a.m. in Penn Hall with Bookwala.

The Rules and Administration Committee is working on legislation regarding the Board of Committee Chairs.

The Budget Management Committee allocated $1,444.58.

Club Reports and Announcements

Relay for Life will take place on April 6.

Student Concerns

Lemon provided four main updates. To begin, the IT Department has done a campus-wide assessment to locate what areas of campus need better Wi-Fi. They will be sending out an email to the community about their upcoming plans to fix the Wi-Fi in March.

The Gettysburgian cannot report on Board of Trustee meetings due to their confidentiality. Lemon only attends to represent student interests.

The laundry machines in Lamp Post have been fixed.

A committee made up of the Communications and Marketing Office, College Life and students worked together to create a Student Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page. The page is an effort to increase transparency between students and the College Administration. Students can also submit questions to be answered and then posted on the page.

The only new concern was that the pool cues in CUB had lost their tips. The Office of Student Activities and Greek Life (OSAGL) has been made aware and will fix them within this week.

Old Business

The 26th Pennsylvania College Guard budget was presented for $665 after not showing up last meeting due to a miscommunication. The budget, which is for the club’s civilian closet, had been reduced as they received money from the Civil War Institute. The price was thus $460, which was funded in full unanimously.

The Engagement Hours amendment from last week was passed unanimously after being previously tabled.

The Student Senate continued their discussion about possible campus projects and their college impact. It was announced that Roman Jordan will be attending the College Life Advisory Committee this week to discuss what the Student Senate’s budget will be for a campus project. Senators discussed valuing projects based on their impact, specifically whether they were long-term or short-term. Lemon suggested helping with already established college projects by signing on students as student representatives rather than funding something completely new. The conversation was tabled to next week when Roman Jordan could provide what money is available for a possible project.
