This morning, President Bob Iuliano announced that United States Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy (D-FL-7) will be the Commencement Speaker for the class of 2022’s Commencement Ceremony on May 14.

“I’m honored and humbled to have been asked by Gettysburg College to serve as this year’s Commencement speaker,” Rep. Murphy said. “I look forward to celebrating the graduating students in the Class of 2022, in the presence of their proud families and faculty, as they complete one important chapter of their lives and begin an exciting new chapter.”

Rep. Murphy, the first Vietnamese-American woman elected to Congress, represents Florida’s Seventh Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. She chose not to seek reelection to a fourth House term in support of what she calls a “citizen Congress,” or running for office out of service rather than a career.

Murphy is the co-chair of the Blue Dog Coalition and a Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Majority. She serves on multiple committees, including the House Ways and Means Committee, House Armed Services Committee, and bipartisan Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol.

Before running for Congress, Murphy was a national security specialist in the office of the U.S. Secretary of Defense. She has also worked as an executive at Sungate Capital and taught business at Rollins College. She graduated from the College of William & Mary and has a master’s degree in foreign service from Georgetown University.

“As a community committed to leading lives of consequence and building a better, more just world, Rep. Murphy stands as an inspiring example of what can be achieved when we work in service to others and the greater good,” said President Iuliano. “I have no doubt that our remarkable Class of 2022 will be moved by her story and graduate energized to Do Great Work in the world.”
