Relay for Life is an annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, where teams of people take turns walking around a track over a six to twenty-four hour period to signify the continuous impact of cancer. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the American Cancer Society at Gettysburg College, Sigma Nu, and OSAGL presented a “Pink Party” to begin a series of Relay for Life events.

Prior to the day of the Pink Party, the Relay for Life team hid pink rubber ducks throughout campus that could be returned for prizes like bracelets, blankets, coloring books, puzzles, and gift cards. This helped to build excitement for the Pink Party and encouraged early involvement in the event.

The event took place on Stine Lake on the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 24. The purpose of the day was to build awareness about Relay for Life and encourage participation in future events. Those who chose to enter the Relay for Life after learning about it were entered into a prize raffle to win an Amazon gift card and a Breast Cancer Awareness blanket.

Attendees at the Pink Party participated in various exciting activities. Some of these related to Breast Cancer Awareness, such as making a breast cancer pin and a pink photo booth. Others, like painting a pot for a succulent and the find-a-pumpkin experience, were similar to previously offered fall activities that were popular with the residential cohort. Finally, students had the opportunity to make their own bracelets or tote bags.

Regardless of the participation of each individual student in the activities, everyone appeared to be enjoying the day. Attendees gathered with friends to advocate for a meaningful cause, while appreciating the efforts of the organizers who tediously planned the event.

To further incentivize students to sign up for Relay for Life, the Relay for Life team created a Registration Challenge for individuals and teams who raise the greatest amount of money. The individual who raises the most money will receive a $99 Spotify gift card, and the team with the most money will receive a mystery prize.
