The Student Senate flag flies above Penn Hall.By Gauri Mangala, Managing Editor

The first student senate meeting of 2020 was held on Monday, January 27. President Pat McKenna ‘20 formally installed three junior senators that were abroad: Nadine Snyder, Ryan Schimmel, and Katherine Troy. He also announced that representatives from Facilities would be making an appearance at Senate within the next two weeks. McKenna went on to install the Spring 2020 committee chairs:

Academic and Career Affairs: Rocco Rodrigues ‘23 and Chandler Wyman ‘21

Budget Management Committee: Giacomo Coppola ‘22

College Life Advisory Committee: Rock Swartz ‘22

CLAC Food Subcommittee: Ziv Carmi ‘23

Diversity: Diana Mendez ’22

Opinions: Jack Lashendock ‘20

Outreach: Syd Quan ‘22

Policy: Shane Carley ‘22

Sustainability: Nadine Snyder ‘21

There is still a vacancy for a chair of Student Safety Committee.

Two representatives from the Garthwait Leadership Center spoke about the upcoming Emerging Leaders Retreat, which is open to all first-year and sophomore students.

Vice President Jack Lashendock ‘20 then proceeded to split club representatives into their respective affinity groups to choose new affinity group leaders. Unlike in past semester, the affinity groups presented nominations to Lashendock at the meetings conclusion that he then sent out to club presidents to vote on. The voting has concluded and group leaders have been appointed:

Academic: Taden Welsh ‘21

Arts and Music: Garrett Adams ‘22

Cultural: Alma Contreras ‘22

Social: Lauren Browning ‘22

Political: Sydney Kaplan ‘22

Religious: Lucas Toglia ‘22

Service: Hank Hahne ‘22

The body then heard a student concern from Ziv Carmi ‘23, a resident of Patrick Hall: “When I came to this school I was promised, and I will pull from the website, regarding first-year RISE rooms, ‘First-Year students who select to live in a RISE room agree to live in a residential environment where alcohol and tobacco are not present nor used.’ However, I have recently discovered that they stick first-year students who sign up for RISE in rooms with other RISE students, which is great, right next to students who [do that sort of thing.]” Carmi went on to recount an incident on his floor where he could smell marijuana smoke on his floor and express that he felt that RISE students should be subject to that living experience.

With little to no concrete reports from committee chairs this early on, senate adjourned and will reconvene on Monday, February 3.
