Blasts from the Past: January 27, 2020

By Shannon Zeltmann, Staff Writer

This week in 1959, the Choir found out their final schedule for their tour from Virginia to Georgia. 60 students went on the trip with concerts at Lutheran churches along the way. They stopped at eight churches between Jan. 31 and Feb. 10. They also had several concerts closer to the college later that semester.

This week in 1989, students were accepting applicants to live at Government House. Today, the building, deemed Carlisle House, is now the campus’s Latinx House. In the past, a variety of students with different majors and backgrounds lived there in a house designated to  those with a special interest in the government, “devoted to promoting political interest.” They held round table discussions, sponsored lectures, and had weekly house meetings which followed Parliamentary Procedure. All students were welcome to apply to the house.

This week in 2009, first-years were still getting used to not having their cars on campus. This was the first year first-years were not allowed to have cars on campus, mainly because there was not enough parking and “to enhance the college community experience.” The college did not have any major complaints about the change, and they offered students a free shuttle to the major stores on Tuesdays and Saturdays. There was a limited number of seats on the shuttle, so they decided to have an extra shuttle running on Saturdays. Many students liked not having a car since they could walk more to stores within walking distance, if necessary, but others felt like they were “stuck” to a small area because of this. However, the college decided to keep this rule, which is still in place today.
