Halloween Festivities and Open Access Week at Musselman Library

By Musselman Library

If you are looking for something fun to do Tuesday, October 23, walk on up to the square in town and cheer on Musselman Library’s Book Cart Drill Team as they perform in the Annual Gettysburg Halloween Parade.

Library staff will march down the parade route dressed as skeletons, zombies, and Frankenstein’s monster, and perform a 30-second dance routine – with book carts – to the Monster Mash. This will be the fifth year the Book Cart Drill Team will be performing in the local parade. Parade starts at 7:15 p.m.

If you want to learn more about Musselman Library’s Book Cart Drill Team, check out the documentary, Gett Down With Your Funky Shelf, created by Gettysburg College Class of 2011 students Anskar Fosse and Patricia Vassey for their final film studies project in Professor Udden’s FILM 220 course.

The documentary reveals the history behind the Book Cart Drill Team, shares the experiences of the 2008 team including footage of the practices and performances of the Grease routine for the Gettysburg Halloween Parade.  The documentary is available in the library’s DVD collection: call # Z716.3 .G48 2008.

Swing by the Library for a Halloween-themed concert by the Sunderman Wind Quintet featuring Robert Cohen’s new piece, “Under the Blood Moon” on Monday, October 29, 12:00-1:00 p.m. This lunchtime concert is open to the public. Bring your lunch and a friend, and we will provide drinks and dessert.

Also, throughout Open Access Week, October 22-26, stop by and check out the Library’s Main Floor Display: “What You Don’t Know About Academic Publishing.” This display will challenge students to think about the process that publications go through in order to arrive in their hands in time for class. The display features three scenarios and questions about the publication process with a flip-up feature to reveal the answer.

While the display will be up all week long, students who stop by the Open Access Week table on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. will be eligible for an Open Access cupcake! We will also be raffling off a $25 gift certificate to the College Bookstore for the student who submits the best guess to the following question: How many downloads does the most downloaded student work in The Cupola have?

Hope to see you there!
