One of the great things about Gettysburg’s campus is the free and easily accessibly Jaeger Fitness Center. The gym has great hours, top of the line equipment, and my favorite: amazing workout classes. This week I am featuring some classes the gym is offering this semester, which are really unique because they are taught by current students of the college.

Cori Bonaddio is a senior who teaches a class called “Dance Fit.” The class is held Tuesdays from 5-6PM and Thursdays from 7-8PM. It is very “Zumba-” inspired, with a combination of hip-hop and classic aerobics exercises. Dance is an amazing way to get exercise; you sweat and can burn up to 1,000 calories in class, all while having fun! Cori said that she really wanted to bring an upbeat, high energy class to the fitness schedule that attending students can get a lot out of. She really strives for her class to build up everyone’s confidence and for them to leave their inhibitions at the door.

Danielle DeMichael is a sophomore who teaches a class called Abs and Body Toning. You can take this class on Monday nights from 7-8PM. This class aims to tone and strengthen the core and abdominals while burning fat. There is also the additional focus on other body parts, such as the arms and legs. You will definitely be sore after this class but will feel stronger and hopefully more confident afterwards!

Joey Meyer is a junior who teaches Boot Camp, which is a class that was very popular last year. It is held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-6PM. This class is a HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workout comprised of a multitude of different cardio and muscle toning exercises. Participants perform each exercise for 30 seconds at the highest intensity that they can individually do, then they rest for 15 seconds, then they go into the next 30 seconds of exercise. This allows each participant to workout at his or her own level of intensity. There are 2 cardio and muscle toning rounds and 1 core strengthening round. There are 3-4 different exercises in each round. The most important things about Boot Camp are that you workout as a team, and push and motivate each other. Joey says that the Boot Camp room is a no judgment zone, where you can enjoy the endorphin release and have fun!

Maxine Peskens is a certified yoga instructor who offers three yoga classes each week. They are held on Sundays from 12-1PM, Wednesdays from 6-7PM, and Fridays from 10-11AM. Her classes are aimed at all levels (beginner to expert) and focus on balance, flexibility and strength. Most classes are “hatha” yoga, or breath based. Sometimes, however, she teaches a more athletic based class.

The gym is also offering classes such like spinning and belly dancing.  The schedule can be found at the front desk of the Jaeger Center, or on the campus rec Instagram page. So the next time you want to switch up your gym routine, grab some friends and try a new class, taught by some pretty amazing instructors.
