9/21 Student Senate Meeting Minutes

The Gettysburg College Student Senate provided the following minutes. Besides formatting, they have not been edited in any way. 

Guests:  

• Eloisa Gordon-Mora, Chief Diversity Officer – Office of Diversity & Inclusion 

• • Discussed the following: slides attached here.  

• • Office’s work: to create a welcoming and inclusive environment at the school, providing services and alliances to advance inclusive excellence in academic, working, and living environments to enhance belonging and cultural awareness. All work in the office is based on the mission of the office (as described in the slides attached above). Created a monthly celebrations calendar, student and faculty preferred name policies, and organize/promote culutral events, dates, and celebrations.   

• • Bias Response and Education Protocol: Best practice model, research-based, works as a team of faculty, students, and administrators to address issues of bias to incorporate issues, concerns, etc. from various college constituencies. Outlines the difference between bias as opposed to discrimination and harassment. Bias is not necessarily illegal or in a pattern, but has created hostility and offense in the receiving party. • • Accessibility Advisory Group: New group composed of students, faculty, and administrators – education and advocacy-based group that monitors and advocates for changes to be made in the institution to create a welcoming and accessible campus for all 

• Upcoming events:  

• • American Dream Screening September 31st at Majestic and Lunch & Learn with filmmaker Abigail Disney October 1st at 12 PM in the Atrium and Gondwe Lecture speaker at 5:15 PM in ballroom  

• • Hispanic Heritage Month Activities including Dr. Jorell Melendez Badillo, historian discussing work as a historical advisor to Bad Bunny’s award-winning album, October 1:00 pm, Bowen Auditorium 

Officer Reports 

• President Duquette 

• • Announcement of Linc (replacement for ChatGBC), “a generative AI portal for our campus community.  Linc gives access to a wide variety of genAI chatbots, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Deepseek, Mistral, and others.” 

• • • Provides the following benefits:  

• • •  Equity of access and no cost for subscriptions; all students can have access 

• • • Classroom use, and the ability to compare the outputs of different models to better understand their inherent biases. Linc will facilitate practical and critical AI instruction.     

• • •  Zero data retention: Linc does not retain or train with data, designed to keep your information safe – use is protected by the College’s privacy policies.  As with any College data services, your use of Linc is subject to the College’s network use policy and acceptable use policy.

• • Timeline for constitution changes 

• • • Constitutional amendments go into effect a semester after voting/approval.  

• • • Group consensus to bring RAC potential amendments incrementally to keep senate running effectively and timely.  

• Treasurer Paine 

• • Currently have $70,754 before tonight’s budget requests 

• • Newman asking for $9,845 

• • Rugby budget request (amount pending tonight) (see later budget request minutes).  

• • Budget Spending as of 20 September (predating today’s proposed spending) 

• Secretary Migut 

• • Please notify me about attendance concerns

• • Fresh Check Day: Wednesday 12 PM – 2 PM. Suicide Awareness programming. On Stine Lake, will have Senate Booth to voice student concerns.

• Anti Racist Collecitve first meeting tomorrow in Junction, 5-6:30 pm: bagels, pizza, etc and planning a trip to Philadelphia for a Palestinian Activist speaker; needs a recommendation for a student driver  

• LASA Thursday 7:45 PUB trivia in The Attic  

• Amnesty International and Nepali Student Association event for Nepal flood relief CUB 2-4 pm on Friday  

Student Concerns 

• Music in the gym is too loud  

• Attic sludge has been reported, and they are working on it  

• Cheerleading practice space concerns  

• Cut-up fruit concern in the bulletin (small volumes of fruit) 

• Change to donuts in servo, smaller 

• Glat women’s bathroom: no hangers for purses/backpacks  

• Sunderman Conservatory students requesting more work tables around the building  

• McKnight floor 3: lack of screens on windows
