3/2 Student Senate Meeting Minutes

The Gettysburg College Student Senate provided the following minutes. Besides formatting, they have not been edited in any way.

Approval of Minutes

  • Motion passed.

Guest Speakers

  • Dr. Paula (Alex) Trillo, Professor of Biology
    • Seeking student feedback on Study Abroad opportunities, and provided a survey to give feedback.
    • The report is due in March, so feedback is needed immediately.
  • Mike Bishop, Executive Director of Auxiliary Services
    • Oversees dining, print shop, post office, and some other campus services.
    • As enrollment decreases, dining’s budget will decrease, and some adjustments will need to be made.
    • Gettysburg administration has requested dining provide a similar level of service, while cutting back on employees and costs.
    • Bullet Hole previously handled about 2,500 customers per day, and current numbers are under 2,000 per day, so revenue is decreasing due to the smaller campus size.
    • Dining is exploring some automated processes, such as self-check-in at Servo or self-check-out in Bullet.
    • Hours may be adjusted to capture customers when it is most efficient.
    • Mail and packages are often delivered to the wrong location because all students list “300 N Washington Street” and some delivery services do not deliver to the mailroom, which is being dropped off now.
    • Questions & Answers
      • In the bookstore, there is no longer stationery or notebooks, and many dorm items have been cut out. Why is the bookstore only selling merchandise now?
        • A new provider was selected to run the bookstore, and they have implemented some changes, but Auxiliary Services has considered some of those changes, adding some dorm supplies and updated clothing for next year.
      • Can Mediterranean Week come back to Root in Bullet?
        • Dining is considering bringing those types of popular dining specials back.
      • Will student positions in the mail room be eliminated with the upcoming changes?
        • No. There is still a need for student employees, as mail is still increasing, even as student numbers decrease.
      • Food options on the weekends are lacking. Is there an opportunity for the chicken breast at lunch to be available on weekends?
        • The deli station and fruit and yogurt bar are being revisited, and those types of options will be assessed by chefs for weekends.
      • What are the potential hours changes?
        • Those decisions have not yet been made, but limited staffing will need to be spread across the campus. The class size for next year will inform that decision.
  • Deb Hydock, Director of Dining Services
    • Wednesday (03/04) evening will be a beach-themed dinner.
    • Questions & Answers
      • What has been the most popular theme night this year?
        • Willy-Wonka was the most popular event.
      • Will more shirts be given out at theme nights?
        • That idea will be brought to the team.
