On Thursday, the Political Science department held an event encouraging students to get to know professors outside of the classroom. The event was held from 4 to 5 p.m. outside of Glatfelter Hall.

At the event were professors with their dogs, an area to make your own sundae and an area to sit and converse. Students were able to get ice cream and then introduce themselves to professors while spending time with the dogs.

“We’ve been doing it for at least four years now, and we just thought we’d do it every fall, kind of a few weeks into the semester when it’s not too hot anymore,” said Political Science Chairperson and Professor Caroline Hartzell. “So we’re here in front of Glatfelter which is where Poli Sci is, and we just do the ice cream bar and kind of all hang out”.

Numerous students attended the event and enjoyed the ice cream and the ability to interact with the dogs.

“I love the puppies, they were amazing and the ice cream was good,” said Gettysburg Student Cassy Martinez  ’25. “But overall, the event was decompressing enough for students to relax and engage in other activities”.

The professors also enjoy the event and the dogs make it easier to spark conversations with the students who attend.

“I think one thing that’s really exciting is seeing how students’ faces light up,” said Associate Political Science Professor Lindsay Reid.

“And then hearing and talking about the stories of their dogs from home, or you know, pets that they love.”

The Political Science department will continue hosting future events through the academic year. One event that they may be hosting is a halloween party where people can dress up in costumes.
