Musselman Library Hosts ‘Long Night Against Procrastination’

Musselman Library hosted its semesterly Long Night Against Procrastination event on Wednesday, Nov. 13, between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. to encourage students to get a productive start in preparing for their final assignments and exams of the semester.
The library used the event as an opportunity to feature an array of its student resources, including student staff from the Writing Center, STEM tutors, peer research mentors and research librarians who were available throughout the evening.
The event was split between two rooms: one of which served as a quiet study space, with the other as a collaborative area with coffee, snacks and fidget toys supplied by the Center for Qualitative Learning. Students were encouraged to commit to a goal for the evening by writing it on the “to do” board, to eventually be moved to the other marked “completed.” Participants were also invited to take a break from studying to join library staff in the browsing room to make vision boards as part of a “crafter-evening” activity at 6:30 p.m.
Research, Instruction and Student Success Librarian Hannah Krauss was involved in planning the event and facilitated the evening.
She commented on the event: “It was fun to plan! “I really love this event as a way to motivate and encourage students to start working on those big final assignments before we get into the hectic last few weeks of the semester. It doesn’t hurt to have some caffeine and cookies to help with that!”
Peer Research Mentor Maria Kardash ’26 also had a role in organizing the event, which she did as one of her library outreach projects.
“[The event] is a great event to get students not only motivated, but happy to be motivated,” she said. “Sometimes people just need an environment — whether in the quiet or collaborative room — with other people trying to accomplish similar goals.”
The library partnered with the Office of Student Activities and Greek Life, which provided Stanley and Yeti cups as prizes for a post-event survey raffle and also hosted “Pancakes with OSAGL” in the College Union Junction following the event.
The event organizers were pleased by the record attendance of 133 students who attended. They said they plan to continue to improve the event to engage more students in the future.
“Maria Kardash did a phenomenal job helping me with planning and organizing,” Krauss stated. “I’m always happy to hear feedback or ideas from students as I plan next semester’s Long Night Against Procrastination!”
