Student Senate 10/28: Pool Proposal and Halloween Events

Officer Reports
President Michael Woods ’25 announced that the following Nov. 4 meeting would be “Senate Halloween.” He welcomed costumes and said that there would be candy. He also announced that there is now a full Senate body for the first time this school year.
Vice President Abby Ruggiero ’26 announced that the Senate will host Pub Trivia in the Attic this Thursday, Oct. 31.
Treasurer Jack Thompson ’27 stated that this year the Senate has so far spent $5,397.71 and apportioned $28,447.28 with $57,666.01 remaining in the budget.
Secretary Olivia Taylor ’25 thanked those who attended the outreach meeting on Oct. 25 and announced that there would be Senate tabling this Nov. 1 from 11:30-1:30 p.m. in the CUB.
Inclusion Officer Eckloff ’27 announced that the Inclusion Committee meets Thursdays at 3 p.m. in CUB 212 and that this week’s meeting would feature a “mini costume contest” with a prize.
Advisor’s Report
Director of Student Activities and Greek Life Jon Allen discussed the planned construction projects on campus and said that he would have more details on the Plank project next week.
Guest Speaker
Director for Religious and Spiritual Life and College chaplain Michael Bright first shared that his office is a confidential resource for students on campus. He discussed that its recent budget increases have correlated with an increase in students participating in religious events, citing the plans for a larger Ramadan event this year as an example.
He encouraged students to follow the RSL Instagram page and said that there will be a “Chapel for Reconciliation” on Nov. 13 in the aftermath of the election.
Committee Reports
The Academic and Career Affairs Committee will meet this week regarding the Honor Commission.
The College Life Advisory Committee will be creating a list of requests and expectations for the Honor Commission.
The Outreach Committee will have biweekly tabling alternating between Servo the Bullet Hole to reach students and collect feedback/concerns. The Senate Open will likely take place in the Spring and will be the main focus of the Nov. 1 committee meeting.
The Wellness and Safety Committee will hold a “Flip a Table” rage room event Nov. 6. It is currently planning a collaboration Fashion Initiative collaboration as well as a mural project and student/faculty basketball game for mental health or suicide prevention.
Club Reports and Announcements
Inclusion and Belonging will host an Indigenous Peoples Month Cozy Cabin event in Glatfelter Lodge as well as a life event in the CUB Ballroom on Nov. 13.
Student Musical Theater will host its Rocky Horror Picture Show shadow cast on Nov. 2 from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. in the Attic.
Students for Sexual Justice will meet on Oct. 31 from 11:30 to 2:30 p.m.
The Debate Club will hold a meeting on Oct. 31 in the Penn Hall Lyceum.
SCAAP requested donations for Thanksgiving meal items, for local families.
Young Americans for Freedom will have an event about the relationship between immigration and economics on Nov. 19 at 7:00 p.m. in CUB 260.
Her Campus will be holding a Halloween Party Oct. 31 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Attic.
Conversations for Change will host an election watch party from 8 p.m. to Midnight. in the CUB Junction.
Student Concerns
President Woods gave an update on the past student concern regarding sharps containers on campus saying that he is still awaiting a response on the matter.
New concerns voiced by students include:
- A broken washing machine in Hanson Hall.
- A replaced washer in Stevens Hall is not connected to SpeedQueen.
- The scanner of the side door in Paul Hall on the side closest to the CUB frequently malfunctions.
- Diaspora House has been experiencing an issue in which people have been entering the house through bathroom windows.
- There has been a zoning change at a building on Carlisle Street.
- Police officers have been stopping students outside College Apartments and first-year residence halls regardless of sobriety.
- Smoke detectors in College Apartments and Ice House are overly sensitive
- Quarry Apartments have been experiencing a heating issue.
- Petition announced to stop modern railroad building project on Carlisle Street.
New Business
The Opinions Committee motion to request that student organizations be allowed to hold events in the campus pool was unanimously approved.
It was announced that there would be an “communication conversation” held the following day regarding the racial slur incident that occurred on campus.
