The Center for Career Engagement held its fall Job & Internship Expo on Tuesday, Sept. 17 in the CUB Ballroom. This annual event allows students to learn about a variety of career options and personally network with representatives from 44 different employers.
The CCE has built relationships with a diverse array of employers that correspond with the career interests of students of all majors. Among those represented were Deloitte, Rockland Immunochemicals Inc., and the FBI Resource Planning Office in addition to several new and returning employers.
“It’s a lot of work, but it’s always worth it because seeing students walk around and connect with employers reminds us why we do what we do,” said assistant director of employee engagement Jillian Bradley on the planning of the expo.
Students in attendance also had the opportunity to get their professional headshots taken for applications and LinkedIn profiles. A student volunteer took headshots as an upgrade from the photobooth used in prior years.
Several students from all class years were at the event between noon and 2:00 p.m. Many sought to take advantage of the expansive network of Gettysburg College alumni who were there representing their employers.
“I’m here because I’m graduating in December and am trying to find a job, so I’m trying to use this as an opportunity to connect with more alumni,” said Michael Klatt ’27. “It’s a really good opportunity to expand my efforts.”
The CCE works with alumni to leverage their positions to support current students.
According to Bradley, “The Gettysburg network is so strong, and to see alumni return to campus to connect with and share opportunities with current Gettysburgians is amazing. We’re super grateful for it!”
One such alumna was Cassie Pickens Jewell ’04. She was at the expo on behalf of the nonpartisan policy research organization Mathematica, where she was initially hired through a Gettysburg connection.
“I’ve always been very thankful for the Gettysburg network, and I like to give back whenever I can,” she said. “There’s about five of us at Mathematica who are Gettysburg alumni, and every year, a couple of us try and come back to the career fairs and tell students what Mathematica is all about.”
The CCE also offered preparation sessions for students to develop confidence and networking skills prior to the expo.
“I think that’s the best part, just being able to see them network,” Bradley stated. “My favorite thing will still always be watching students and seeing their confidence in making connections.”
The annual Job & Internship Expo is just one of the many ways by which the CCE prepares Gettysburg students for the pursuit of successful careers.
