On Thursday, the Butterfly Coalition held its “Pan Dulce con Chocolate” event, celebrating Mexican sweet bread, hot chocolate and music. The event was held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the basement of the Office of Multicultural Engagement.
The event was planned to bring together documented and undocumented campus residents to share Latin American food and culture with others. It featured tables with numerous types of Mexican bread and sweet treats, accompanied by Latin music.
“Culturally, although it is food, it also brings together a lot of families because when we sit down and eat that; it’s to come together as one,” said Butterfly Coalition vice president Cynthia Ortiz-Sanchez ’26. “It’s to bring together the community of students, and not just, you know, the undocumented students on campus, but also documented, international, whatever it may be.”
Cynthia, along with the Coalition’s president Toni Esquivias ’25, have been with the Butterfly Coalition for several years and have organized numerous events during that time.
“The Butterfly Coalition was founded in 2016, so it’s been going on for a while. I’ve only been part of it for almost three years,” said Esquivias. “I’m a senior, so it’s been three years that I’ve been a part of it, and it’s a wonderful organization.”
The Coalition hopes to build upon the success of “Pan Dulce con Chocolate” with its upcoming fall events, particularly one this coming November.
“In November, we will have an event for National I Stand with Immigrants Day,” said Toni. “That event is done on Campuses across the U.S., and it brings awareness to what it means to be undocumented.”
Future events that will be hosted will have further emphasis on immigrant awareness, Latin American culture and the overall community at Gettysburg College.
