The 2024 Masters Tournament was a spectacle of golfing excellence, captivating fans worldwide with its thrilling displays of skill, determination and sportsmanship. Held at the historic Augusta National Golf Club, this year’s tournament brought together the world’s top golfers in a fierce battle for the coveted Green Jacket. From rising stars to seasoned veterans, each player showcased their prowess, making it a tournament to remember.
One of the biggest stories to come out of the 2024 Masters was about the Big Cat himself. Having struggled for years now with injuries and off-the-course issues, Tiger Woods has always seemed to make it for the Masters. This year, once again, Woods was front and center and made history by making 24 consecutive cuts and playing his 100th round at Augusta in his classic Sunday Red. At the end of the day, Woods finished in 60th with a final round of +5, and a final score of +16. This hurts for all golf fans around the world. It seems that the titan of golf we all grew up with may never win again. But regardless of this, there is no doubt that Woods is a walking piece of golf history and people will tune in to watch him as long as he is playing.
In a different storyline, Scottie Scheffler has once again proved why he is the best player in the world. It is only April, and he has already won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players Championship, The Houston Open, and now The Masters for the second time in three years. Scheffler came out swinging (no pun intended) with his first round on Thursday, finishing the day at -6, with six birdies and no bogeys. On his second day at Augusta, he finished even by notching three birdies and three bogeys. Day three was an exciting one, as Scheffler drained four birdies, three bogeys, and a double bogey. After the double bogey, it was not looking good for the big man, but in true Scheffler form, he absolutely carved apart the par 5 hole 13 to score an eagle and ended -1 for the day. Sunday was birdie central for Scheffler, as he tallied seven birdies and three bogeys to finish the day at -4, and a cumulative -11. While this was not the lowest-scoring win of all time, (which is Dustin Johnson’s -20 from the 2020 Masters) the -11 was enough to secure Scottie his second Green Jacket, as well as $3.6 million.
Following Scheffler in the leaderboard was Ludvig Aberg at -7, and Max Homa, Collin Morikawa, and Tommy Fleetwood tied for third at -4. They were followed by Bryson DeChambeau and Cam Smith in 6th, who both finished -2. Xander Schauffele claimed the solo 8th slot at -1.
Although the beloved tournament is over, there is still a lot of golf to be seen this year, and we can always look forward to and mark our calendars for Apr. 10, 2025, as the beginning of the 89th Masters.
