Student Senate 10/23: New Amendments Brought to the Floor

Officer Reports

President Andrew Lemon ’24 began the meeting by asking for the Student Senate to vote among the finalists for the Ralph Cavalier Award. These finalists included Visiting Assistant Professor Erin Clark, Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies Stephen Stern and Visiting Assistant Professor of Economics Xingyi Puckett.

Vice President Geoffrey Meadville ’25 wished everyone a happy upcoming Family Weekend and urged senators to attend the various events happening over the weekend. He also emphasized the importance of attendance at Senate meetings and announced that the next meeting will be a costume contest among the senators.

Parliamentarian Michael Woods ’25 shared that many policies will be coming to the floor at this meeting. 

Treasurer Alfredo Román Jordán ’26 gave a budget update, with the Student Senate spending $3,106 and allocating $28,710. He expects the spending will slow as the semester begins to wind down. 

Secretary Grace Nelson ’26 thanked everyone for attending the Senate Open over the past weekend. 

Inclusion Officer Abby Ruggiero ’26 wished everyone a happy Family Weekend.

Director of the Office of Student Activities and Greek Life (OSAGL) Jon Allen announced that the changes to Plank Basement have been made and the various new rooms are open, including an art room, a movie room and an arcade room.

Committee Reports

Chair of the Academic and Career Affairs committee Andrew Thibaudeau ’26 shared that they met with the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs Jeanne Hamming. During the meeting, Hamming explained curriculum changes that will be implemented for the class of 2029. This will include the removal of the Internet, Data & Society course and a sophomore seminar being implemented that focuses on public service. 

The Budget Management Committee allocated $1,031 during their last meeting.

The Board of Committee Chairs will be choosing a new time to meet due to Family Weekend occurring over their usual meeting time.

Co-Chair of College Life and Advisory Committee Jack Murphy ’24 shared that no one showed up to the committee this past week and urged people to attend. 

The Opinions Committee thanked everyone who attended their last meeting and shared that an opinion was passed that will come to the floor next week. This week, they are working on an opinion on Wi-Fi and infrastructure on campus.

Club Reports and Announcements

The American Cancer Society will be hosting its annual Pink Party in Glatfelter Lodge this Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Gettysburg Film Club will be showing a Halloween movie outside Penn Hall on Friday at 8 p.m. 

The Alexander Hamilton Society will host speaker Rafi Cohen in Science Center 200 on Wednesday at 6 p.m. 

The Inclusion and Belonging peer workers will be hosting a cozy cabin in Glatfelter Lodge from 4-6 p.m. 

The Class Officers of 2025 are hosting Pub Trivia this Thursday at 8 p.m. in The Attic.

Her Campus and the Gettysburg Writers Association are hosting a Halloween event in the Attic from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. 

Public Policy House will be hosting Criminal Justice Reform Advocacy David Garlock at Glatfelter Lodge for an informal conversation about his experience on Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. Garlock will also be giving a speech in Mara Auditorium at 6 p.m. that same day. 

Student Concerns

Lemon gave updates to past student concerns, announcing that Gettysburg Smoothie Company will be posting their hours and menu on the Dining Services website, pizza is still being served in Servo, and the chipmunk in Musselman Library was caught and released. Lemon also said that the Dean of Students Jeff Foster and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Office are working with Jewish students around inclusion issues. 

New student concerns were then raised. A student asked for clarification on club representatives being named on EngageGettysburg, which Meadville answered. Another student shared that the crosswalk lights on North Washington Street between Hanson and Breidenbaugh Halls have not been working for almost two weeks. 

Vice Chair of the Opinions Committee Belle Pedersen ’24 noted that some lights around campus have been flickering or gone out and also asked that students be given notice when Moodle will be down for maintenance.

Senator Antoinette Weah ’27 provided an experience of RabbitTransit buses running late, which led to students being stranded at Walmart. 

Several senators raised concerns over the poor Wi-Fi and cell service on campus.

Senator Dominic DiLuzio ’26 asked if Gettysburg Smoothie Company could have earlier hours. 

Old Business

The Committee Attendance discussion from last week continued and was ultimately moved to a discussion in a Board of Committee Chairs meeting. 

New Business 

The Conference Equivalent Events Amendment was merged with the Trip Amendment to properly define what a trip is versus what a conference is. This combined amendment passed after a lengthy discussion.

A new Affinity Group Leader Election Amendment was brought to the floor. This amendment would change the election process for Affinity Group leaders so that clubs would nominate a representative to run and then vote for who they wanted through a rank-choice system. It was tabled after discussion.
