Gettysburg hosted the first Centennial Conference Swim Meet of the season for the men and women teams on Sat., Oct. 21. Swarthmore, McDaniel and Bryn Mawr (women only) also participated in the meet.
Gettysburg’s men’s team halved their pair of meets, as they beat McDaniel handily but fell to Swarthmore by a slim margin.
The brother duo of Sam Nelson ’27 and Harry Nelson ’25 placed first and second in the 1000 freestyle with times of 9:45.48 and 10:03.77. They also both placed first and second in the 500 freestyle. In the event, Sam won with a time of 4:49.81 and Harry followed with a time of 4:53.60.
Charlie Cross ’24 came out victorious in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. In the 100, Cross finished with a time of 58.42, and in the 200 he topped the pack with a time of 2:08.40. Cross’s teammate Declan Sheeran ’24 checked in right behind him at second place in the 100 breaststroke with a swim of 59.71. Cross also came in first place in the 200 IM, swimming a 1:58.09.
Edward Kim ’27 won the 200 backstroke by a tenth of a second with a time of 1:54.68. Kim also placed second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.50, and his teammate, Connor Vienneau ’24 followed in third place, swimming a 1:47.16. Max McAlister ’26 came in first place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:57.82. McAlister also tied for second in the 100 butterfly, as he posted a 51.97.
The 200 medley relay team of Kim, Cross, McAlister and Cort Hobelmann ’25 earned second place with a time of 1:35.74. In the 400 freestyle, the relay team of Hobelmann, Kim, McAlister and Connor Booth ’27 placed second with a swim of 3:11.39.
To round out the podiums, Gettysburg had a few swimmers take home third place as well. Hobelmann came third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.91. Mason Dillon ’25 finished in third place in the 200 IM with a swim of 2:00.38. Cole Martin ’27 earned third place in the 100 freestyle, swimming a 48.18. Luke McKenna ’24 placed third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:55.08.
Gettysburg’s women’s team finished the meet with two wins over Bryn Mawr and McDaniel but fell to Swarthmore.
Mia Yancey ’25 led the way and took home first place results in the 100 and 200 freestyle with times of 53.22 and 1:56.52, respectively. Olivia Pyott ’25 also had a dominant win in the 200 breaststroke, swimming a 2:26.04. Pyott finished second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.22.
Yancey, Pyott, Natalie Wisniewski ’24 and Bramley Hawkins ’26 teamed up for the 200 medley relay, and they finished in second place with a swim of 1:47.50. Hawkins also had a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.23. The 400 freestyle relay team of Yancey, Hawkins, Delaney Reck ’27, and Valerie Lawton ’26 came in second with a time of 3:36.44. Reck came in third place in the 100 freestyle with a swim of 54.49 as well.
Ava Berry ’27 placed second in the 1000 freestyle, and teammate Paige McKim ’27 filled out the podium in third. Berry had a time of 10:52.34 and McKim swam a 11:16.50. In the 500 freestyle, Berry took home another second-place finish, swimming a 5:21.66.
Other second-place finishers for the Bullets were Lindsay Blake ’25 and Delanie McKenzie ’27. Blake swam a 2:09.62 in the 200 backstroke and McKenzie finished with a 2:13.68 in the 200 IM. Mckenzie tacked on two third-place finishes in the 100 and 200 backstrokes, as she posted times of 59.83 and 2:09.72, respectively.
Both teams look to build upon their solid start when they compete against Franklin & Marshall on Fri., Oct. 27 at 5:30 p.m.
