Gettysburg College Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa Initiates 10 New Member

By Clinton Baugess, Secretary of Iota of Pennsylvania Chapter

The Iota of Pennsylvania chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa Society welcomed 10 new members into Phi Beta Kappa on Friday, Oct. 27 in Mara Auditorium.

The newest members include: Salim Alwazir, Benjamin Durham, Albrun Johnson, Emily Jumba, Jacob Krebs, Sarah MacDonald, Michael McCarty, Avery O’Neill, Emma Ortiz and Julia Wass.

Students are elected to Phi Beta Kappa by the resident PBK members on campus. In additional to high academic achievement in the liberal arts and sciences, members consider evidence of intellectual curiosity and academic integrity. The Iota of PA chapter typically elects around 60 students per year, selecting from the top 10% of the class. Two other initiations will take place in April and May.

Phi Beta Kappa, founded in 1776, is the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the United States. Gettysburg College has sheltered a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa since 1923 and has inducted nearly 3,500 members. Phi Beta Kappa currently includes 293 chapters at American colleges and universities.
