On Sept. 27, members of Sceptical Chymists hosted a liquid nitrogen ice cream event on the Science Center patio. Sceptical Chymists is a student organization that encourages students to extend their interests in the field of chemistry and related areas through reading, research, activities and lectures on contemporary topics in the field.
Sceptical Chymists President Ethan Clare ’25 and other club members demonstrated how to make ice cream using liquid nitrogen and then served this sweet science experiment to those in attendance. Participants also customized their ice cream with a selection of toppings such as whipped cream, sprinkles, Oreo cookies and more.
Clare described the club as a casual social space that allowed chemistry majors and other Gettysburg students interested in chemistry to interact with one another as well as chemistry department faculty members.
“It’s supposed to just be a fun, enjoyable moment,” Clare said.
Clare believes the Sceptical Chymists club creates a low commitment and low-stakes environment to discuss interest in chemistry.
“We’re just trying to get people to hang out with chemistry students and faculty,” Clare explained.
Clare shared there are two upcoming Sceptical Chymists events: a “painting and pumpkins” event on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. and a “cookies and ornament making” event on Nov. 27 at 6 p.m.
