Field Hockey Report: Bullets Look Strong Going Into Conference Games

By Max Ferguson, Staff Writer

The Bullets’ field hockey team has begun their season. So far, they have played four non-conference games with a respectable .500 average. They head into inter-conference play after one more non-conference game.

The Bullets started off their season hot with a 4-1 win against Alvernia in Reading, PA. Gaby Markunas ’24 scored her first career goal in the first period of the game to set the tone against the Golden Wolves. The Bullets dominated this matchup, as they scored once every quarter. Hailey Rhine ’24 was the star of the game, with two of the four Gettysburg goals on the day.

Gettysburg then took on Ohio Wesleyan at home where they lost a close game 3-2. The Bullets started off slow with no goals in the first half. Ohio Wesleyan pulled ahead early in the second quarter when they scored two goals. The Bullets tried to mount a comeback in the second half but Ohio Wesleyan held them off and scored one last goal to secure the win.

After that, Gettysburg went to Lebanon Valley to take on the Flying Dutchwomen. Bella Bonanzinga ’25 scored the lone goal in this game to secure the victory. Lebanon Valley was dreadfully inaccurate, as they took seven shots, only one of which was on target.

In their most recent matchup, the Bullets took on the #25 ranked Shenandoah University Hornets. Gracie Wilkerson of Shenandoah was their main offensive leader, and scored two of the three goals for the Hornets. Shenandoah controlled this matchup by keeping the ball on the Bullets’ side of the field. The Hornets got off eight shots on goal compared to Gettysburg’s two. The Bullets’ only goal in this game was courtesy of Andie Aloi ‘25 in the 36th minute.

Following this final non-conference game against Bridgewater State, the Bullets will take on all of their Centennial Conference foes over the next few weeks. They are currently in the middle of the pack within the Centennial Conference rankings, as they sit in sixth. Gettysburg hopes to climb the ranks as conference play begins in order to make a conference tournament bid.

The Bullets faced off against the Bridgewater State Redhawks on Sept. 20 in their “You Matter Game,” which spread awareness for mental health and suicide prevention. They pulled out an impressive 3-1 victory to put them at 3-2 on the season.

The Bullets face off against Muhlenberg on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. in Allentown.
