Annual Consent Fair Held for the Student Body

By Laken Franchetti, Editor-in-Chief

On Thursday, a Consent Fair was held outside of CUB with the participation of numerous campus resources: Counseling and Wellness Services, the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC) and the Office of Sexual Respect and Title IX.

Counselor Emily Leitzel was pleased that students were attending the fair and looking at the booths. Counseling and Wellness Services has held a booth at the event before, and the staff members believed it important for students to attend.

“It’s an event that we are excited to be a part of again this year, and it’s been busy so far today,” said Leitzel.

Students received free merchandise throughout the event as well as resources related to consent. Staff Counselor Rebecca Colgan spoke on the significance that consent plays on a college campus.

“Consent is important for campus culture. Promoting that and communicating that — communicating consent — is respectful,” said Colgan.

GSRC employee Em Eveland ’24 said that by the GSRC holding a booth at the event, students can better understand the office’s mission and resources. Eveland also emphasized the importance of having first-years understand that the GSRC office is in Apple Hall.

“A lot of first-years don’t know where the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center is because it’s located in [an upperclassmen] residence hall, which they normally don’t have much business going into, so we think this is a really important event,” Eveland said. “It’s also a big part of our mission since our mission is related to gender and sexuality, and we work closely with the Title IX office and the other offices here.”

If students stopped by every table at the fair, they would be entered into a raffle for prizes.

Audrey Whisman ’27 appreciated the college holding the Consent Fair for the student body.

“I think it’s really awesome how they are promoting safe sex and really want to protect all of the students,” Whisman said.
