On Thursday, Sept. 22 the Eisenhower Institute and the Center for Public Service hosted a Voter Registration Drive in the College Union Junction.
Members of the campus community were free to simply walk in and register to vote. Students and members of the Eisenhower Institute made the process fluid, indicating the necessary sections and information needed for the forms. Many of those attending were out of state students that needed to register in the state of Pennsylvania.
Eisenhower Institute Washington D.C. Program Manager Lauren Cole ‘19 said she “wanted to be able to combine CPS, some political science organizations, Eisenhower scholars, and the Eisenhower Institute to come together to form a working group where we can encourage as many students as possible on campus to make sure that their voice is heard in November.”
Many students walked in and out of the event as other organizers announced the drive to students walking around in CUB.
Arden Tuft ’26 said, “I think it was very empowering to see a group of young people come together and educate others on the importance of voting and giving them the opportunity to register in a state that a lot of kids who go to this school are not originally from.”
The general election for the state of Pennsylvania is on Nov. 8 and will determine the governor of Pennsylvania, a U.S. senate seat, and representatives in Pennsylvania’s 17 U.S. House districts. After the Supreme Court’s ruling on Roe v. Wade, the Pennsylvania election is extremely publicized, as the outcome will determine Pennsylvania residents’ right to an abortion.
The Eisenhower Institute and the Center for Public Service will also set up a voting center in the CUB Ballroom on Nov. 8 for students to vote.
