Medical Amnesty Policy Update

By Laken Franchetti, Assistant News Editor

Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities Elizabeth Farner sent an email to the campus community on April 7 regarding an update to the medical amnesty policy.

Medical amnesty helps to ensure that students who are at risk of alcohol overconsumption receive appropriate medical attention. Students are urged to call 911 or DPS if this occurs. Medical amnesty then provides protection to the student who calls and the student in need of medical assistance.

The new medical amnesty policy details that Gettysburg College will not pursue disciplinary action against those in possession or consumption of low level drugs or alcohol when such possession or consumption is revealed through another student’s report. The assignment of disciplinary points for students involved in these events has changed from 1 point to 0 points for an alcohol violation. This change has been made to the policy so that students do not have obstacles such as fear of disciplinary action when there is a need for emergency medical attention.

This new policy is effective immediately, and Farner thanked the Student Senate Safety Committee and the Student Life Committee for their input on the policy’s revision.
