Senate: Springfest Update, Election Education

On Feb. 28 at 7 p.m., Student Senate held their weekly meeting. 

President Sydney Quan ’22 called the meeting to order, and began with officer reports. Vice President Miranda Zamora ’23 announced an Election Education series where anyone interested in running for Senate positions can learn more about the process and job expectations. Election Education will be held on March 2 at 6 p.m. in Glat 001 and March 15 at 4 p.m. in CUB 260.

Treasurer Connor Heath ’23 gave a budget update. Senate has spent $52,684.09 with  $38,827.91 left over and a rollover fund of $41,994.53. 

An advisor report was given by Director of Student Activities and Greek Life Jon Allen. He updated the floor on Gettysburg’s upcoming Springfest. Allen noted the misconception that Springfest is being canceled. “Springfest is not being canceled,” Allen said. It is taking on a new form with an event hosted by the Gettysburg Environmental Concerns Organization (GECO) on April 22 and International Food Fest on April 23. 

Committee reports began with the College Life Advisory Committee announcing that VP of Facilities Jim Bieseker will be speaking at the committee meeting this Friday at 3 p.m. in CUB 210A. There is a project in motion concerning a potential bike program on campus. 

The Outreach Committee announced a website change. Now, committee chairs have the freedom to personalize their page enabling them to make advertisements and updated. A drop down list will be added to the website making it overall easier to navigate. The Policy Committee announced a restructuring plan. 

The Safety Committee announced their examination of the Medical Amnesty Policy and changes that may take place. They will be reaching out to the student body and advertising to get opinions. Sustainability Committee announced that Jim Biesecker will be speaking at the next committee meeting. The Wellness Committee are co-hosting an event at the Jaeger Center in April. They also noted potential changes to Jaeger Center to make it more applicable and open to students. A survey is in the works and will be sent out.

Parliamentarian Jones ’24 gave an update on behalf of the Policy Committee. Student Senate’s webpage is being redesigned where bylaws will split into different sections, with their bylaw as the heading, working as a folder where each tab would be separate documents.

Following committee reports was a budget request from Gettysburg’s Quiz Bowl Team. They requested $2,643.74 where the constitutionality of the request was discussed on the floor. The motion was tabled until the next meeting upon discussion with the Provost.  

Club Reports and announcements followed. Student Senate is hosting their very own event, a Class Officer and Student Senate Open in the Attic, with details to come. Quiz Bowl Club announced their hosting Pub Trivia in the Attic from 8-9:30pm. 

Student concerns were brought up by Han Gong ’22 regarding a facilities request. The concern surrounded facilities not being on call during the weekend to address emergencies or vandalisms that occur. A housing concern was also brought up about accommodations not being fulfilled for students studying abroad. 

New business took place with an overview of Election Education headed by Parliamentarian Alexis Jones ’24. Applications are due March 25 for President and Vice President positions, April 15 for technocratic and class, and polls will close on April 23. 

Jones then gave a policy update. She announced the election rule changes made by the Election Advisory Committee (EAC), which is to become a more permanent presence in the campaigning process. She outlined added language and other rule changes surrounding personal campaigning such as posters, social media, etc to the floor for confirmation. The motion was to table the amendments. 

EAC made their announcement that elections will take place after students’ return to campus from spring break. 

Student Senate was adjourned.
