Guest Speaker: Race to Zero Waste
President of Gettysburg Environmental Concerns Organization (GECO) Diana Biesecker ’22 was the guest speaker for the meeting. She spoke about the Race to Zero Waste (formerly known as RecycleMania), an eight-week national competition to reduce waste and increase recycling.
This year’s competition runs from Jan. 30 to March 26. The competition divides the campus into five zones based on the locations of residence halls and the number of students in each residence and tracks how much recycling and waste they produce in pounds. The zone with the highest percentage of recycling taken from the waste and recycling combined wins. So far, Apple and Quarry are doing the best, with 61 percent recycled.
Throughout the weeks, GECO and Facilities will be hosting events, reporting weekly data waste, and campaigning on social media.
The grand prize for the winning group of housing complexes will be $5 added to each resident’s Bullet Bucks account. Students may have the chance to win prizes by participating in events throughout the competition. The QR code on posters around campus and the Google Sheets link in @gettysburggeco’s Instagram bio allows you to track the progress.
The Race to Zero Waste competition events scheduled include the TRASHion Show (co-sponsored by OSAGL) on Feb. 25 at 8 p.m., which includes making clothing items for a fashion show out of trash, recyclable items, or thrifted clothes. They will also have a reusable water decorating event, sustainable documentary, advertising for bullet’s green containers, and end of competition celebration with Rita’s Italian Ice. Students can learn more and sign up for the email alias by joining GECO’s engageGettysburg page.
