Parents weekend: a time to reunite with family, go out for food that is not Servo, and watch some Bullets’ football. Gettysburg took on Johns Hopkins on Saturday, October 23, friends and family filled the stadium but the team, yet again, missed their mark, and at the third quarter, the cold rain pushed out the crowd. Bullets lost to the Blue Jays, a top 25 team, 50-0.

Hopkins came out strong in the first quarter when he ran an 87-yard drive that resulted in a 7-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Stevens to Harrison Wellman. On a bold fourth-down conversion attempt deep in their own territory, the Bullets turned the ball over on downs, and Stevens threw another touchdown pass to Quinn Revere to give the Jays a quick 14-0 lead.

The second quarter saw more of the same, Hopkins threw for two more touchdowns to common targets in Wellman and Revere. However, Sophomore Chris Singleton Jr. ’24 gave Musselman Stadium something to cheer about when he blocked one of John Krill’s extra-point attempts. Kyle Battles would add a field goal at the end of the half though to make it a 30-0 game.

Gettysburg came out hot in the second half, but their key tackles in the backfield slowed their momentum and forced Senior Doug Cummings ’22 to punt. The Jays did what they had been doing all game and capitalized; Stevens threw another bomb to none other than Wellman for a 42-yard touchdown pass and Wellman’s third touchdown of the game, this put the visitors up 36-0.

The Jays were successful with the run game too, Spencer Uggla rushed for a 20-yard touchdown at the end of the third quarter. Hopkins put the icing on the cake in the fourth quarter and scored the game’s final touchdown after the Bullets mishandled a snap on a punt attempt. First-year quarterback Bay Harvey then threw to Artie Collins to reach the 50 point mark.

Johns Hopkins passed for a total of 396 yards and carried the ball for 164, while Gettysburg had 82 yards in the air and only 33 yards on the ground. The Bullets will travel to Ursinus College to take on the Bears on Saturday, October 30.
