The American Cancer Society on Campus held their Pink Party registration event for Gettysburg College’s Relay for Life. The event occurred on Oct. 14 at Glatfelter Lodge and included numerous activities, music, food, and raffle opportunities.

Relay for Life is an annual fundraiser in the spring held by the American Cancer Society that involves teams of participants walking around a track for long periods of time. Participants join to raise money and awareness for cancer research and patients. The Pink Party allowed students on campus to register and donate to the cause.

President of the American Cancer Society on Campus Megan McCook ’23 said, “This is the first registration event since 2019, and going into tonight, we have already raised half of what we collected last year.  [Relay for Life] gets major support from other organizations on campus.”

Participating in Relay for Life is particularly popular within campus groups such as fraternities, sororities, and athletic teams. There is a registration challenge among the Relay for Life teams on campus to see who can raise the most money. Currently, Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) is in first place after holding their Breast Cancer Awareness Shavathon event earlier in October.

Nicole Cesanek ’24 said, “I started getting involved with Relay for Life the fall semester of my freshman year. There were a lot of virtual events due to COVID, so it’s nice to see the progression from last year to now.”

As an incentive, attendees of the Pink Party received raffle tickets to potentially win prizes after they registered for Relay for Life. During the event, students gathered with friends and peers to support this cause.

After about three hours, the American Cancer Society on Campus raised close to $900 and gained about 60 new participants for the Relay for Life event. Students who still wish to register can do so through the link on the Relay for Life Gettysburg College Instagram account @relayforlifegburg.
