Blast from the Past—April 27, 2021 Edition

By Shannon Zeltmann, Staff Writer

This week in 1931, students could go on an economical camping trip during the summer, throughout industrial America. There were four different trips the previous summer, the shortest trip being 1,000 miles over two weeks. The cost for each student would be $1.50 per day, but the Thorne-Loomis Foundation who put together these trips would cover half of the students’ expenses. The trips were about ten people with “one capable young man” organizing each group.

This week in 1941, the Pan-Hellenic Ivy Dance was held in Plank Gym. There were about 200 couples who went to the dance. The queen of the Ivy Dance was decided based off who want the most representative co-ed of the senior class. The theme for the dance was “spring on the campus” and featured flowers and shrubbery as décor around the gym. They also had some ivy leaves decorating the entrance to the gym for the dance. It was a semi-formal event and lasted about four hours.

This week in 1981, the library was preparing to their move from Schmucker Hall to the new Musselman Library. They were planning on doing it on a Wendesday morning, and they had Friday as a rain date. They had students and staff sign up to help with the move. They planned on having some people in Schmucker to load carts with books, then have people move in pairs move the carts across campus to Musselman, where others would unload the carts. Those moving the carts across campus would have to bring the carts back to Schmucker, so they could be filled with more books. The library estimated they had about 10,000 cartons of books that needed to be moved, preferably within a four-hour period. They hoped all students on campus would help, as it would be a memorable occasion of their college careers.
