Great Work from Home: Day 9

Welcome to the ninth edition of our “Great Work from Home” daily bulletin, an initiative of The Gettysburgian during this season of social distancing. This week, each morning, we will present a curated playlist, a favorite Gettysburg campus photo, and hometown spotlight, each submitted by a different Gettysburgian.

We are also issuing a new challenge this week: in honor of Gettysburg sunsets, share with us your best sunset pic, either from Gettysburg or from wherever you are.

This is a way to start our days together. We’ll present these features on Instagram, on our website, and, if you like, via email (see sign-up below). We’ll be reaching out to students, faculty members, and employees and asking them to share, and we invite you to do so too; find links to Google Forms for each of these recurring features at the bottom of the page.

As always, the most important part of this initiative is you. So tell us, what do you like? What don’t you like? What else would you like to see? Get in touch with the #GWFH team: editors@gettysburgian.com.

Also, please tell us how remote learning and working is affecting your day-to-day life. We would love to hear from new voices — students, staff, faculty, administrators, and friends of the college are welcome to fill out our form, and we’ll be in touch.

For now, we hope you enjoy today’s playlist, curated by Cameron Sauers ’21, today’s campus photo, courtesy of Garrett Adams ’22, and today’s hometown profile, written by Katie Oglesby ’23, who comes from San Diego, California.

Remember, you can take us out of Gettysburg, but you can’t take Gettysburg out of us!

I’m from San Diego, California, and while this photo may not be the palm trees or coastline you’d expect, this is what I see everyday from my backyard. This is the San Diego I know and love. Being in Gettysburg has reminded me what I love about my home. I didn’t think I would miss the palm trees, year-round warmth, or even the ocean, but I do. I miss my community, the shopping centers I grocery shop at, the trail to the canyon by my elementary school, and the drive to my house. And, of course, I miss my family and friends whenever I leave, because they’re what makes this place special. Without them, this photo would just be of an open space. With them, this photo is of my home.

Being so far from Gettysburg now, I miss my morning walks to class, the Glatfelter bell telling me how late I’m up doing homework, the library, and even Hanson Hall (as much as that pains me to admit). I’m glad that on either side of the country, I have a place to call home. For now, I can look out my window and see something I’ve known my whole life. I can find comfort in the beauty of what’s familiar.
