Great Work from Home: Day 13

Welcome to the thirteenth edition of our “Great Work from Home” daily bulletin, an initiative of The Gettysburgian during this season of social distancing. Each morning, we will present a curated playlist, a favorite Gettysburg campus photo, and hometown spotlight, each submitted by a different Gettysburgian.

We are also issuing a new challenge this week: make your best attempt at baking servo cookies from home, and share your results and your recipe here. Maybe one of you knows what the secret is!

In addition, you can look forward to a reading of Apotheosis, a play written by Madison Cramer ‘19 and directed by Katherine Scott ‘21, starring Hannah Kolarik ’20, Isaac Briggs ’20, and Gauri Mangala ’21, live on our Facebook page this Saturday, April 11 at 7 pm EST. Find our event on Facebook here.

This is a way to start our days together. We’ll present these features on Instagram, on our website, and, if you like, via email (see sign-up below). We’ll be reaching out to students, faculty members, and employees and asking them to share, and we invite you to do so too; find links to Google Forms for each of these recurring features at the bottom of the page.

As always, the most important part of this initiative is you. So tell us, what do you like? What don’t you like? What else would you like to see? Get in touch with the #GWFH team: editors@gettysburgian.com.

Also, please tell us how remote learning and working is affecting your day-to-day life. We would love to hear from new voices—students, staff, faculty, administrators, and friends of the college are welcome to fill out our form, and we’ll be in touch.

For now, we hope you enjoy today’s playlist, curated by Dr. Susan Hochmiller, today’s campus photo, courtesy of Logan Shippee ’22, and today’s hometown profile, written by Alex Romano ’20, who comes from Mullica Hill, NJ.

Remember, you can take us out of Gettysburg, but you can’t take Gettysburg out of us!

“Music Education! We do group bonding activities! Last September we did a day trip to Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium. Lots of candy was consumed and elephants observed.”

“A tree and some plant life that has grown over a chain link fence surrounding the grassy field outside of my neighborhood. My bedroom window looks out on to it. There is a building out of sight in the picture that probably belongs to whoever owns the field. The stereotype of New Jersey as a congested, filthy, toxic heap of factory rubble and sludge fails to hold up when countered with such an image of sleepy pastoral beauty as this photo taken at sunset on the penultimate day of March in Mullica Hill, my hometown. It is always a little bit strange living in the southern section of the state, as the region can only be defined as a rural suburb, or suburbanized farmland, with easy access to a big city. It’s still no Gettysburg, but it’s home, and I guess that it isn’t too bad to be back here.”
