The Monday, Feb. 4 assembly of Student Senate continued the conversation of the presentation delivered by Dean of Students Julie Ramsey and Director of Public Safety Bill Lafferty regarding the possible situational arming of DPS officers with the presentation of an opinion from the Opinions Committee.

The opinion stated that Student Senate is in favor of the proposal, so long as officers undergo proper training and students are notified when officers would be armed. A motion to strike the first line claiming that national crime has increased recently was granted. Another motion to amend any reference of ‘arming DPS’ to ‘limited and situational arming’ was also granted. The opinion was tabled, pending affinity group leaders talking to their clubs.

An amendment editing language regarding the Board of Directors, committees, and the election of affinity group leaders was tabled.

Three clubs presented budget requests:

  • Biosphere was allotted money for their Spring 2019 semester events
  • Disciplemakers Christian Fellowship was allotted $3,720 for scholarships for a conference
  • Student Musical Theatre was allotted $1129.29 for a reimbursement and the rights for Mamma Mia!, the Spring musical
