Sophomore Colin Kowalski took to the mat Saturday to assist the Gettysburg College wrestling team earn a seventh out of ten finish during its season opener at the Messiah College Invitational.
Kowalski finished his day as the runner-up in his weight class (157lbs), which was one of his best career finishes as a member of the Orange & Blue.
The sophomore wrestler dominated the early goings of the bracket with a commanding 6-0 win over Zachary Harrell of Wheaton College. He then faced his biggest challenge of the day, Lycoming College’s Trevor Corl, but he managed to hold a slim lead of 9-7 for the decision win.
Kowalski defeated two more opponents, one from Messiah and one again from Lycoming, before he had the final facedown for the title against Div. I Liberty University wrestler TK MeGonigal. Kowalski fought and maintained his composure, but he eventually gave way to MeGonigal’s strength in the 3-2 decision.
The sophomore earned his spot on the team as the top wrestler in the 157-weight class last season, and he has held onto this starting role even with the addition of a strong first-year class.
Kowalski looks to build on his success last season in preparation for the Centennial Conference championships. He finished as the runner-up in his weight class last season.
Kowalski then recorded two victories at last season’s NCAA Division III East Regional Championship. This success from last season appears to be infiltrating the 2016 – 2017 campaign and is why Colin Kowalski is The Gettysburgian’s Bullet Athlete of the Week.
