Miley Goes Mad at VMA’s
By Janelle Thompson, A&E Editor
Once again, the Video Music Awards have people up-in-arms about the falling standards of today’s entertainment industry. If viewers tuned in hoping to catch the stellar performances of this year’s hottest stars, they were highly disappointed. From Lady Gaga’s awkward costume changes to the silhouetted freak show that was Kanye West, fans had little to write home about – but that wasn’t even the worst of it.
Forget the moon men that were handed out to well deserving artists, because the winner for hot mess standout of the night hands down goes to Miley Cyrus. Her wild and possibly inebriated antics on Sunday’s show have blown up all social media channels, and have most of the young singer’s fans questioning her choices.
For those of you who missed the madness, Miley performed her summer single We Can’t Stop, accompanied by a line of gigantic dancing bears. Dressed in a bulky bear leotard, the singer stumbled around the stage with her tongue hanging out of her mouth, and her hands playing crotch guitar. As if this weren’t bad enough, as soon as Miley was joined by singer Robin Thicke, she ripped off her leo, revealing her scantily clad figure underneath and began gyrating.
At this point for me, and I assume most of the viewers, the sensation of secondhand embarrassment was starting to kick in.
The camera kept panning to members of the audience like Drake who was clearly bored with the proceedings and 1Direction who all wore varied looks of disgust. Capping it all however, was the moment Miley bent double and began twerking in front of a cool, calm, and collected Robin Thicke. I think it’s safe to say MTV will not be asking Miley to perform on their stage again anytime soon, and – based on the memes, jokes and comparisons that have popped up all over – her career might not be too far from over.
Thankfully the night wasn’t a complete bust. The dignity of the VMA’s was salvaged by Justin Timberlake who gave a great mash-up performance of his songs from both now and back in the day, and who was even accompanied by former boy band NSYNC. Katy Perry’s sweet finale, which took place under the Brooklyn Bridge, was also a breath of much needed fresh air.
With big wins like Selena Gomez who received Best Pop Video and Macklemore who took both Best Rap Video and Best Video With a Social Message, this show will be a difficult one to forget, let’s just hope that next time Ms. Cyrus is able to keep it in her pants.
