The College honored students for a variety of achievements, both academic and other contributions to the campus community, at Fall Honors Day on the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 26 in Christ Chapel.  Students were praised throughout the event by various staff and faculty members including: Janet Morgan Riggs, President of the College; Christopher Zappe, Provost; and Yasemin Akbaba, Associate Professor of Political Science.

Akbaba, as the recipient of the 2012 Thompson Award for Distinguished Teaching, delivered the Honors Day Address entitled “One-Way Ticket to Opportunity, Failure and Growth.”

In her address, Akbaba expressed excitement about the award that she had recieved and thanked people who had supported her, but  chose to focus primarily on the students being honored at the event. She praised students for their successes, but also challenged them to move out of their comfort zones.

The event was an opportunity to honor both students and faculty members for their outstanding accomplishments at the College. Junior Megan Bailey, who was honored with the J. Andrew Marsh Memorial Award, described her experience at the event, “It was very special to be honored in such a nice ceremony with my family, friends and professors present. I was so glad to be able to share the moment with a number of my other friends who also received awards.”
