Gettysburg’s Dining Services are truly a step above the rest; we have won several awards for our uniquely delicious food over the years, including the Excellence in Food Safety Award given by the Pennsylvania Restaurant Association in 2008 and been included in the Top 20 Best Campus Food Award in 2009 named by the Princeton Review. Not only does Dining Services pride itself on offering quality food, but it succeeds tremendously in providing students with numerous options.
The College’s on-campus dining options include a wide-range of food that is sure to satisfy whatever students are craving. Of course there is Servo, the largest and most popular dining facility on campus. Servo offers hot breakfast, lunch, lite fare, as well as dinner Monday through Saturday. Sundays at Servo are unique since brunch is offered, followed by lite fare and dinner at the normal times. Servo provides students with countless healthy food options. As Director of Dining Services Gary Brautigam and Assistant Director Debra Hydock explained, “Servo’s fruit and yogurt bar offers low-fat vanilla and Greek yogurts, cantaloupe, grapefruit and orange sections, and a variety of toppings. Also found in Servo are vegan and vegetarian choices offered at every meal; at least 15 different types of cereal, skim, 2%, and chocolate milks as well as specialty milks such as Lactaid, soy and rice.” There are up to three different hot food stations open at each meal including a vegetarian station, along with additional stations offering fruit, yogurt, salad fixings, and a deli bar. Servo also prides itself on supporting the local economy. “Fresh eggs, honey, apples and other seasonal fruits are purchased locally. Dining Services has 10 shares of a local CSA and fresh produce is delivered to campus within a few hours of harvesting,” Brautigam and Hydock explained. There are dessert options after lunch and dinner—be sure to try a famous Servo Cookie—and there is just about every kind of drink a student could imagine. No matter the meal, Servo will surely provide quality food and also the opportunity to see a few familiar faces along the way.
Students on-the-go typically stop by The Bullet Hole for their meals or study break snacks. Located in the lower portion of the CUB, The Bullet Hole has several pre-prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner options, including cereals, fruit cups and yogurt parfaits as well as pre-made salads and wraps. There is also a sub sandwich station where students can have freshly made subs and there is an additional food station serving made-to-order burgers and fries, soups and various types of fresh pizza. The Bullet Hole is the perfect spot to grab a quick bite or to catch up with friends and watch whatever sporting event is featured on the TVs.
For students wishing to go the healthier route during meal-time, there is Ike’s, named after President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was a Gettysburg College trustee. Ike’s is a weekday lunch and dinner hotspot, providing students with an extensive salad bar and a variety of freshly made sushi options. Students can design their own small or large salads for a flat rate of $4.50 and $6.25, respectively, and can add premium toppings for an additional $1.35 each. Their numerous unique salad dressings are greatly appreciated by students looking for something outside the ordinary oil and vinegar or ranch. The soup and bread combination is also a nice option, serving as a light but satisfying meal. Ike’s offers fresh food in a variety of options.
Another light and fresh dining option is The Dive, located in the Athletic Center. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner weekly (except Sundays), The Dive has a permanent salad and sandwich menu along with specials that are rotated weekly. In addition to that, they have fresh sushi and personal pizzas, both of which are offered in several different varieties. The Dive is also known for their signature smoothies, including flavors such as chocolate peanut butter banana, peaches and cream and citrus kicker, just to name a few. This location has many options that will certainly appeal to students post-workout or students who are looking for something healthy and satisfying.
Regardless of which location on campus students choose, their meal choices are sure to please. From superbly fresh ingredients to restaurant-quality products, Dining Services certainly redefine the standards of college food. As Brautigam and Hydock stated, “Eating on campus allows you to take part in the socializing that goes on during meals so that you can take the opportunity to connect with your friends and classmates beyond the classroom.”
