On Tuesday, Provost Jamila Bookwala announced in an email the launch of a new online Master of Education degree program in Educational Design and Inquiry. Applications will be open from March 1 to April 15, and classes begin on May 19.
Bookwala stated that this program is the College’s plan to step forward and meet the need of “highly qualified and compassionate K-12 educators—teachers who are not only experts in their field but who also possess the creativity and leadership to transform education for the better.”
This degree blends “educational access with the principles of design thinking” so working teachers can grow as educators. The program duration is two years and was made to accommodate teachers’ schedules through an online format, with three incorporated summers and optional in-person learning opportunities.
According to the email, this program is designed for eight to ten K-12 teachers to learn closely together. Through the program, these teachers will conduct a capstone project that “identify opportunities to create new inclusive pedagogical initiatives or address existing educational challenges.”
“At Gettysburg College, we are committed to preparing students to rise to the unfinished work of our time. Our new Master of Education program will ready K-12 teachers from across the nation to answer this call by both fostering innovation and advancing access in education,” said Bookwala.
Finally, Bookwala thanked professor of educational studies in sociology and director of the Office of Teacher Education and Certification Divonna Stebick for her work in bringing the program to life. The email then prompted those interested to look at the website for more information.
