Throughout February, the Black Student Union (BSU) on campus held a variety of events in celebration of Black History Month. BSU President Britney Brunache ’22 gave us a rundown of the events they had to unite the community throughout the month.
On Feb. 1, the BSU had their first general meeting of the semester to catch up after the winter break and get to know each other. Members got together to make vision boards.
Co-sponsored with the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department, on Feb. 11, a watch party took place for the documentary “Pray The Devil Back to Hell,” and a discussion followed about Leymah Gbowee, a subject of the documentary, and the Liberian Women’s Movement as a whole. Later that night, BSU held their own Black History Month Trivia Night.
A general meeting in tandem with Alpha Phi Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta titled “What You Know About Love?” took place on Feb. 15 in honor of Valentine’s Day.
On Feb. 17, BSU streamed one of two interviews of Black alumni in collaboration with Musselman Library Special Collections, starting with an interview of Edmund Hardy ’08. On the 23rd BSU continued their Black alumni interview with Michelle Lynette Hughes ’91.
On Feb. 18, a pajama movie night for “Judas and The Black Messiah” was held in the Gender and Sexuality Center.
Another general meeting of the BSU was held on March 1 to close out the month, where several Black alumni, who are all participants in the Gettysburg Alumni of Color Council, were invited to come and talk to students about life after college.
Finally, on March 2, BSU held a special collections event, “Black Lives at Gettysburg,” to present the history of Black students on campus, from the first students to more recent alumni.
